Building materials and hardware are an essential part of Resource’s business. We will gratefully accept donations of a wide variety of things including:

-       Timber
-       Doors
-       Windows
-       Glass
-       Paint
-       Plumbing/ Pipes
-       Roofing/ Guttering
-       Tools/ Power Tools
-       Other oddities
 
Timber            

Can have nails in but not split/ cracked or rotten.

-       softwood (over 1m)
-       hardwood (over 1m)
-       floorboards/ cornice/ moulding
-       decking
-       sleepers (these can have some amount of weather damage)
-       chipboard/ plywood/ MDF (only large unused pieces – no scraps or damp/ swollen/ rotten pieces)
 

Metals - Steel/ Copper/ Aluminium

Anything that is made of copper, bronze, aluminium and stainless steel we can take (regardless of condition). If you are not sure, test with a magnet – even a fridge one will do – if it does not stick it is OK as we can recycle non-ferrous metals.

-       all copper and bronze will be accepted either for resale or recycling

-       copper pipes/ bathroom supplies (i.e. taps and fittings)

-       electrical wire – all copper wiring no matter what condition (even cords cut off electrical appliances) for recycling

 

-       steel - is generally reused for welding, so lengths over ½ metre, angles, frames, Hill’s Hoists, odds and sods, etc. as long as not overly corroded

-       steel girders/ all RSJs

-       reinforced steel for concreting/ REO (is always popular)

-       stainless steel – everything can either be reused or recycled, from sheeting to cutlery

-       steel pipes and fittings
 

-       aluminium - lots of things are made of aluminium – including windows, doorframes, sheaves, extrusion, boats, sheets, doors, ladders, tubes, venetian blinds, pots and pans, etc – all of this can be recycled, remember to check with magnet if you are unsure

 

-       lead – usually from old wiring, pipes and flashing can be recycled

 
-       barbed wire – lengths over 5m, not rusted either

-       fencing – chicken wire, etc as long as not rusted or damaged

 

Bricks/ blocks/ pavers/ etc.

Bricks and blocks can have mortar on them as long as it is soft or crumbly (no hard cement/ concrete) and preferably no halves/ bits.

-       sandstone - is always welcome

-       all bricks are welcome - especially convict and solid red

-       besser blocks
-       pavers

-       tiles – uncut (a few cut pieces as part of larger drop-off is ok), without adhesive or grout unless vintage/ Federation era (i.e. not 1970s). Also, accepted if they can be used for mosaics.

-       marble – offcuts are ok as long as over 20cm square
 
Doors

Most doors accepted – except if damaged, excessively weathered or flimsy i.e. if it is chipboard or plywood there is a good chance we will not take it.

-       external (including with some damage if good solid timber)

-       internal (with only minor damage, no lightweight plywood/ cardboard)
-       wardrobe/ kitchen/ cupboards (with only minor damage)
-       all fly-screen doors (as damaged ones can be recycled)
-       boat portholes
-       skylights (especially with frames or undamaged)
 
Windows

Are fabulous donations – generally, however, we only accept windows with unbroken glass panes. However, if a frame is solid and made of good wood or has historical value then these will probably be accepted.

-       timber frames (if premium timber i.e. huon pine we will accept without glass)

-       aluminium frames (if glass is cracked we can recycle the aluminium)

-       steel window frames (only if large or interesting)
 
Glass

-       all unbroken glass (as long as no cracks, including no chips on corners)

-       stained glass/ leadlighting (even if broken/ damaged we may take)

-       mirrors (as long as no damage)
 
Paint

As long as still identifiable (i.e. has label on) and useable (i.e. when you shake the tin it does not sound watery).

-       tins over 2 litres = more than 25% or more remaining
-       1 litre = 50% or more remaining
-       anything smaller = 3/4s or more remaining
 
Plumbing/ Pipes

-       all types of pipes and hosing – as long as clear inside (i.e. not blocked) and free of holes/ corrosion. Under 50mm wide minimum length = 1.5m, for wider pipes minimum length = 1m.

-       plumbing fittings, taps/ faucets, basin mixers, elbows, t-junctions, grates, etc

-       rainwater tanks (as long as not rusted/ corroded)

-       hot water units (unfortunately we usually do not accept hot water units – the only exception is if they have copper cylinders inside)

-       toilets – only in very good condition (except pre-1950s)

-       sinks – only in very good condition & no cast iron sinks (for some reason they do not sell). However, stainless steel sinks we accept (in any condition as we often recycle the steel).

-       Baths:            
o      cast iron baths (in most conditions),

o      enamel baths (if in fairly good condition, as poorer ones are often used for horse troughs/ composting/ etc.),

o      plastic/ fibreglass baths (only in good condition i.e. no major scratches or staining)

 
Roofing/ Guttering

-       roofing tin (sheets over 1m, without rust, holes or tears)

-       guttering (not rusted, pieces over 1m)
-       slates (pieces over 15cm x 20cm)
 
-       Generally we do not take roofing tiles
 
Tools/ Power Tools
-       all working power tools

-       broken power tools (top brands such as Makita, De Walt, etc., as well as mid-range such as Ryobi, Black & Decker, etc. can be resold as parts only – if you know something does not work then please cut the cord, which can be recycled. However, we do not take non-working cheap brands such as GMC etc.)

-       hand tools – all usable hand tools are welcome. Tools with broken shafts that can be replaced are taken (i.e. hammer and axe heads).

-       We cannot take safety gear (i.e. hard hats, climbing harnesses, etc.) but can take work clothing as long as not overly soiled/ ripped.

-       Wheelbarrows – as long as either the tray or frame is good (preferably both) we will take them

 

Nails/ Screws/ Adhesives/ etc.

-       all nails, screws, nuts & bolts (as long as usable i.e. not overly rusted, bent, etc.)

-       unused tubes/ tubs/ boxes of adhesives, filler, silicon, Liquid Nails, etc. (as long as still workable and over ½ full)

-       bags of mortar/ cement/ grout/ adhesive/ etc. (as long as still workable and over ½ full)

 
Other oddities

In good condition any of the following are great:

-       gates

-       roofs (in good condition, if large then contact the TipShop before to discuss)

-       stairs
-       sheds
-       rabbit hutches
-       dog kennels
-       sawhorses
-       work benches
-       shelving
