| General information on donating reusable goods |

Thank you for considering donating goods to Resource Work Cooperative, here is a guide to what we will and will not accept. If you have any questions about something not covered on our website or a donation of particular interest or large volume then please ring either the Resource Tip Shop (03 6224 8669) or the Resource Office (03 6234 3772). Drop-offs are important to Resource and make up approximately 20-30% of the materials we either resell or recycle. What our workers look for in any donation is: can it be resold to be reused? If not, can it be recycled? This includes:
- Furniture/ Carpet
- Electrical Equipment/ Appliances
- Computers
- Antiques/ Bric-a-brac
- Photographs/ Artwork/ Posters
- Kitchenalia
- Office Equipment
- Gardening Supplies
- Sporting/ Camping Equipment
- Toys/ Parenting Aids (i.e. prams, etc.)
Although with time and imagination almost anything can be reused there are some things that are simply not worth Resource taking, whether due to lack of public interest, space in the shop or if an object is in too poor condition. Generally the higher quality, more expensive an item the poorer condition we will accept – i.e. virtually no-one would pay to fix a broken $20 DVD machine but someone may take on a broken 1940s radiogram to restore as a hobby, likewise someone may buy a damaged Chesterfield sofa to reupholster but is unlikely to re-cover a tatty cheap run-of-the-mill couch, or a 200 year old book has historical appeal even if damaged in a way that a 1980s Mills & Boone romantic novel would not… of course, some of these decisions are subjective but most of our workers know what sells and does not from experience. If we do not take something please do not feel insulted we genuinely appreciate every offer of a donation. Where to go? What to do?
Donations and drop-offs are processed at the Tip Shop itself (for directions see this map). We are currently working with Hobart City Council to improve our infrastructure to help to make the whole process quicker and smoother. However, at the moment, drive in to the Resource Tip Shop and park in the car park. Please, find a staff member who will then check that what is being donated is appropriate. Usually building materials, carpet, furniture and larger items will be unloaded in the bottom yard. While for all household/ domestic donations you will be directed to the top drive (just before the exit gate) where everything can be unloaded.
Our staff will be happy to help. Thanks again! |
